MBBS in Russia is a 6-year degree offered majorly as a specialist bachelor’s degree in General Medicine. It is emerging as an alternative option for all those aspiring doctors who couldn’t secure admission to a good Indian medical college in recent years. Over 53 Russian universities offering an MBBS degree are approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI) allowing you to complete MBBS abroad and practice within India. As per the MCI rule, all students going to study MBBS abroad have to qualify for NEET exams.
No language test like TOEFL/IELTS or entrance exam is required for admission to the majority of the Russian universities. However, you must have at least an aggregate of 50% (in PCB) or more in your CBSE/ISC 12th results. The tuition fees of some of the popular universities range between 193,000 to 874,000 Russian Rubles per annum. For Indian students that round off to 1.8 lakhs to 8.5 lakhs a year, graduates have to go through the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) to legally practice in India with an MBBS degree from Russia.
Due to COVID-19, all classes are currently conducted online but applications are still accepted by the universities for new sessions. Russia has been rising up the ladder of study destination for medical aspirants as it boasts occupying around 30 positions among the top 100 medical schools as per WHO Rankings. Additionally, the minimal fee allows students to fulfill their dreams to study abroad at an affordable cost.
About 4000 Indians are studying medicine in approximately 20 universities in Russia, as of August 2020. Following are some of the reasons why MBBS students are attracted to study in Russia. Tuition fees of MBBS in Russia are much less than in other countries like the USA, UK, Canada, etc. The economy of India and Russia is almost at the same level as the value of 1 Russian ruble approximately equal to 0.99 INR. Thus, accommodation and other costs remain almost the same as in India. The admission process is also extremely simple. Students are not required to appear for any additional country-wise examination like MCAT to study MBBS in Russia. Language proficiency test scores like IELTS or TOEFL are also not required for admission in this country. This also saves the cost of appearing for such tests. The curriculum of Russian medical universities is similar to Indian medical colleges. Thus, students can return back to India to pursue higher studies without any extra coaching. The majority of the Russian universities are recognized by MCI and WHO. So, graduates can practice in India after qualifying for the screening test. Most of the Russian universities have coaching centers to prepare Indian students for MCI screening tests. There is a 100% student visa guarantee if a student is accepted by a Russian university and submitted all documents correctly.
The admission Process for MBBS in Russia is quite simplified for Indian students. Anyone with a senior secondary school certificate with biology and chemistry as compulsory subjects is eligible to apply. Some universities don’t even have a minimum percentage requirement. Hence, when planning to study abroad, Russia is a great choice for pursuing an MBBS degree. Students may have to appear for an entrance exam conducted by some Russian universities for admission to the MBBS program. However, they are not as competitive as other medical exams like NEET, MCAT, etc. Questions are designed to check the basic knowledge of students in subjects like biology, chemistry, and English.
Application deadlines for most universities of Russia lie in the months of July and August.
Indian students can directly apply from the website of the university. After submission of an online application, you might have to download it and submit it along with other required documents with an official signature. It is, although, not mandatory for all universities.
